History

When geologist Bill Buckovic developed a cobalt mineral project in the east province of Cameroon, he founded Geovic, Ltd, a U.S. mining company.

Buckovic, as a cultural anthropologist, is committed to the longterm welfare of the people in mining areas. Under his leadership, Geovic built a school and water cistern early in its exploration in Kongo
, the nearby village most affected by the new mine.

With this belief that the local communities should be the main beneficiaries of mining activities, Buckovic and his uncle, Richard Buckovic, founded GeoAid, Ltd, to operate independently in the best interests of the local community.

GeoAid, Ltd, formed as a nonprofit in 1999 in the U.S. In 2008, the name changed to GeoAid International, Ltd, to allow the nonprofit to serve as an umbrella organization for other Geovic, Ltd, projects. GeoAid Cameroon, registered in 2002 as a nonprofit association in Cameroon, is that country's local affiliate of GeoAid International.
